Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend’ Video All About ‘Cars, Girls’

Posted in Celebrity, Music, Photo, YouTube with tags , , on May 4, 2012 by thebestmusicnow

If Justin Bieber were your boyfriend, you’d probably spend a lot of time in parkades. The pop star’s “Boyfriend” video debuted Thursday night — amassing more than 2 million views on YouTube by this morning. Shot in L.A., it’s a straightforward concept: Bieber and some Step Up 2 extras somehow drive to the top of some building, then spend the afternoon dancing and pulling donuts in their “swaggy” muscle cars. And, just like the song, the video finds Bieber making an incredibly easy pitch to the ladies: be his girlfriend. Please.

A dream date with JB, however, isn’t exactly what he promises in the lyrics. There’s no fireside fondue, no trips around the world. Instead, Bieber’s special lady has to be content watching him dance, watching him lead a sing-a-long, watching him show off his hella cool wheels. And she has to share him with an extensive cast of extras — but then, that’s a feeling millions of Beliebers have long since grown used to.

And for a tune that’s supposed to usher in the just-turned-18-year-old’s “mature” new era, the vibe isn’t that much different from his break-out clip, “Baby.” Bieber is still singing and dancing — dreamily — with a crew of kids. He has his driver’s license this time, though. That’s something.

For more than a month, Bieber had been teasing the video’s premiere with preview clips — including 45 seconds of footage aired during an April episode of The Voice. Those clips, as we mentioned yesterday, were directed by Colin Tilley (the “Boyfriend” video was helmed by Director X), and featured Bieber in a variety of impressionistic scenes — strikingly different from sunny vibe of the final cut. Some of those scenes are used in the opening of “Boyfriend,” and as Bieber explained during an interview with MTV last night, the change-up was just him playing with his fans.

“I kind of switched it up from all the teasers,” Bieber said. “I switched up the whole video on them, and really, I think it’s super cool. I wanted to do something a little bit more mature.”

Just because “Boyfriend” is here doesn’t mean Bieber’s going to stop being a little tease. During his interview with MTV, he revealed he already has new tidbits to shill, all leading up to the June 19 release of upcoming album, Believe.

“My next single is better,” he told MTV after “Boyfriend’s” premiere. “I think it’s ‘As Long As You Love Me.’ It’s like mid-tempo. I just think it’s edgy. It’s something I can hear on the radio. It’s going to get stuck in people’s heads,” he said, also revealing tentative plans to release another track, written for his mom. “I think I’m going to put it out on Mother’s Day,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s going on the album.”

Beach Boys to kick off 50th anniversary tour in Tucson AZ

You probably could’ve guessed it was a Beach Boys show just by the shirts the men in the audience wore: Collared, short-sleeved and oversized, with palm trees, hibiscus flowers and nautical gear printed all over them.

At the back of the stage, surfboards were lined up like Grecian columns on either side of a huge video screen. It wasn’t until midway through the band’s second set that Mike Love acknowledged what half the people in the audience must’ve been thinking: “It’s, uh, been a little while since we’ve all been on tour together.”

This year, the Beach Boys turn 50. Until the Grammys this past February, Brian Wilson, the band’s troubled heart, hadn’t been on stage with the rest of them since 1996. The tour kickoff last night at the Anselmo Valencia Amphitheater in Tucson was, in that sense, a milestone: not only a marker of their anniversary, but of a public reconciliation between Wilson and the band’s other surviving original members: Al Jardine, Bruce Johnson, David Marks and Wilson’s cousin, Mike Love.

It’s not until a band like the Beach Boys runs through their hits back-to-back in rapid succession that you realize just how many hits they’ve had. Over the course of nearly two and a half hours, they played an astonishing 42 songs, many of them medley-style, with nearly no banter in between. Amid the most familiar stuff — “California Girls,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Good Vibrations” — were a healthy number of deep cuts and covers, including “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” and Phil Spector’s “Then He Kissed Me,” which Jardine probably wisely rephrased as “Then I Kissed Her.” There were also two uncanny video appearances by Carl and Dennis Wilson, both of whom died years ago. (Dennis “sang” “Forever,” while Carl took on “God Only Knows,” a song Brian wrote for him on 1966’s Pet Sounds.) And about halfway through the second set, something new showed up: A reflective midtempo ballad called “That’s Why God Made the Radio” — a moment that, like so much of the band’s best music, elevated the adolescent to the divine.

Rihanna Tweets Topless Pic, Renewing Good Will After Racist Instagram

Posted in Celebrity, Photo with tags , , , on March 8, 2012 by thebestmusicnow

Now this is more like it, Rihanna. She tweeted the above photo, featuring her return to black hair and a blond African rattle-looking thing, with the caption “Where have you been all my life?” So we assume the rattle is a prop for her “Where Have You Been” video, which she’s been shooting with famed choreographer HiHat for the past two days. This is why we love Rihanna’s social-networking habits. And a vast improvement over her left turn into nasty, vaguely racist swipes last week, when she Instagram’d a photo of a bag of rice cakes wearing sunglasses and hoop earrings with the caption “Ima make u my bitch.” And we’re all assuming it’s a swipe at Chris Brown’s current girlfriend Karrueche Tran, who is half Vietnamese. And Tran, according to the New York Daily News, hit back on her Facebook page (which she’s since closed and moved to a different name), “I’m Angeline (sic), you’re Jen. C’mon you see where Brad is at.”

So, before we start throwing things and going into a tantrum about Rihanna needing to stay away from Chris (pretty please?), let’s just concentrate on the topless pic again. Ursula Stephens’ emergency hair fix — which makes a whole lot more sense now that we know Rihanna had a video to shoot — is put through the ultimate test here: sweaty dancing! And of course, on Rihanna, that look is even hotter.

Whitney Houston Re-Enters Billboard Hot 100

Spurred on by a massive uptick in digital sales and radio airplay following her death this past weekend, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” re-entered Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart this week, landing at #7. And, in the process, it forced the magazine to adjust the way it handles so-called “catalog” tracks on the chart.

Historically, catalog songs — tracks still frequently aired on contemporary radio months or years after their initial debut — were ineligible for the Hot 100 (Billboard moves them to several “recurrent” charts once they’ve spent 20 weeks on the chart and have fallen below position number 50), though, in a statement, Billboard director of charts Silvio Pietroluongo said that will now officially change.

“Going forward, we feel that it is the proper move to allow older titles posting enough activity to return to the Hot 100 if ranking in the chart’s upper half,” he said.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, “I Will Always Love You” — which topped the Hot 100 for a staggering 14 weeks in 1992 — posted a 6,723 percent increase in digital sales, while Nielsen BDS reported radio airplay of the song leapt by 915 percent, both of which helped it vault back into the Hot 100. In addition, Houston will also place two more songs on this week’s singles chart, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” at #35 and “Greatest Love of All” at #41.

Houston’s back catalog has also seen marked increases in sales, as Whitney: The Greatest Hits re-entered the Billboard Top 200 albums chart at #6, and several of her biggest hits have combined to rack up nearly 900,000 downloads in the days since her death.

The resurgence of “I Will Always Love You” is historic, though not entirely without precedent. In 2001, following the attacks of September 11, Lee Greenwood’s 1984 hit “God Bless the USA” and Houston’s iconic performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” both returned to the Hot 100, though, as Billboard explains “at the time, the inclusion of these songs properly captured the musical mood as the nation reacted to that tragic day.”

Lea Michele Defends Weight: ‘I Can Eat Some Bitc–s Under the Table’

Lea Michele covers the December issue of Allure. The 25-year-old “Glee” star looks retro glam rock on the cover with fierce cat eye eyeliner, big and beautiful hair, and a graceful white gown.

In the mag the star mused on her unconventional look saying: “When I was 15, my mother and I went to meet a manager who said, ‘You have to get a nose job in order for me to work with you,'” Michele says. “My mother would say to me, ‘Barbra Streisand never got a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’ And this was before I really even knew who Barbra was. I just knew that she was, like, the messiah for girls like me.”

Lea also tries to put to bed long-festering rumors that she suffers from an eating disorder. The actress has previously said a new diet (veganism) led to her noticeable change in shape in mid-2010. In Allure, she explains that the weight loss was also due to a surgery she had to address a jaw infection. “People get confused, like, you know, I just eat grass,” she jokes about her veganism. “I’m half Italian. I can eat some bitches under the table.”

She also defended last year’s controversial GQ shoot with Terry Richardson in which she, Dianna Agron and Cory Monteith posed in sexed up situations. “People were really offended by this, being that we play high-school students,” she says. “But we’re not high-school students! Cory is almost 30, and Dianna and I are 25. But there was such controversy. I do try to keep in mind that there are a lot of young viewers watching our show. But it’s a delicate balance, continuing to be who you are but also remembering you’re in a certain position. But would I do the shoot again? Absolutely.”

Justin Bieber To Perform At ‘Christmas In Washington’?

Posted in Celebrity, Music, Photo with tags on November 16, 2011 by thebestmusicnow

It sounds like Justin Bieber is going to have a very capital Christmas.

While in England to promote the release of his Under the Mistletoe album, Bieber stopped by radio station Kiss FM, where he not only discussed his fans in the White House, but revealed that he’ll be performing at the annual “Christmas in Washington” show, to be broadcast December 16 on TNT.

“President Obama … his kids really like me, which is cool,” Bieber said. “I’m actually doing ‘Christmas in Washington,’ and I’m performing for him and the whole Senate and all that.”

Bieber previously performed at the event in 2009 — much to the delight of Sasha and Malia Obama — sharing the stage with the likes of Usher, Mary J. Blige and Sugarland. He also took the stage at the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll in 2010.

The lineup for 2011’s “Christmas in Washington” show has yet to be officially announced, and a spokesperson for TNT did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. But, if he does perform, Bieber can count on the support of the commander in chief, whom he described to MTV News as “really cool.”

“[Obama] was really nice, and I was just happy to be [at the White House],” Bieber said last year. “We met [Sasha and Malia], took pictures with them, took pictures with the first lady.

“The first time I met him was a couple months back,” he continued. “I got to hang out with him in the Oval Office, which is pretty crazy, because no one really gets to go in there. It was pretty incredible. I got pictures with him.”
